September 2012

The weekend is almost upon us and I have Burgers on my mind.  Not a Big Mac, not a Whopper, not even a Double Double.  I don’t have time to relax with a juicy one because I’m currently wrapped up in “Burger Bustle:  Ellie’s Organics.”  The theme of the game is a good one:  The plucky employee (Ellie) is tired of working for the man (the aptly named Mr. Gristleman) and sets out on her own path, to provide more healthy fast food to impatient diners.  Needless to say, it gets tougher and tougher to keep them satisfied as the menu diversifies and Gristleman proves a formidable foe. It’s been a few years since I worked in the food service industry (I won’t say how long precisely but here’s a hint:  “where’s the beef” was a popular commercial catch phrase when I was slinging fries and pouring sodas).  Back then, the only alternative to grease, salt, and trans fat was a colorless, tasteless, ice cold salad that could only be salvaged with heaping globs of ranch dressing – thus defeating the purpose.  Since that time, there have been significant menu changes.  Instead of the quad burger covered in cheese, we can order fresh/organic meals that are actually nutritional while accommodating busy lifestyles.  It’s not just the fancy new upstarts like Ellie that are dishing up healthy.  Most of the major chains are providing meal time options that would have been unthinkable when “two all beef patties special sauce lettuce cheese..” was the jingle in your head that would not go away until you had one.  On that note, I’m going to ramp up to the next level on “Burger Bustle:  Ellie’s Organics” and then hit the drive through.  Will it be healthy?  Will it be decadently indulgent?  That’s going to be my little secret.
